Beginner’s Guide to Cleansing and Charging Your Crystals
Many people come to me asking how to take care of their crystals after buying them. Crystals are often chosen for support in areas like money, peace of mind, protection, relationships, or focus. But one thing beginners usually don’t realise is that crystals also need regular cleansing and charging.
From my experience guiding people, I have seen that when crystals are cleansed and used with proper intention, people feel more connected to them. Just like we feel tired after a long day, crystals are believed to absorb surrounding energy and may need refreshing from time to time.
If you are new to crystals, don’t worry. Cleansing and charging them is not complicated. You only need a simple method and a clear intention.
Why I Recommend Cleansing Crystals
When a crystal is mined, stored, handled, or delivered, it passes through many places and people. Because of this, it is believed to collect different energies along the way.
This is why I usually advise cleansing a crystal to:
- remove stored or unwanted energy
- prepare it for your personal use
- help it feel more aligned with you
- reset it after emotional or stressful situations
In most cases, I suggest cleansing:
- when you first receive the crystal
- after using it during difficult periods
- once every few weeks as a simple routine
There is no strict rule. If the crystal feels dull or heavy to you, that is a good time to cleanse it.
Simple Ways I Suggest for Cleansing Crystals
1. Water Cleansing (easy and common)

One of the simplest methods I suggest is holding the crystal under clean running water for a few seconds. Tap water is fine, and natural water can also be used if available.
While rinsing, just keep a thought that any unwanted energy is being washed away.
Important note from my experience:
Some softer stones like Selenite, Malachite, Desert Rose, Pyrite, Hematite, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Fluorite, Kyanite, Black Tourmaline should not be soaked in water because they can get damaged. If you are unsure, it’s safer to use another method.
2. Incense or Smoke Cleansing

Another gentle method I often recommend is passing the crystal through incense smoke. Sandalwood incense, sage, or other natural incense sticks work well.
Hold the crystal in the smoke for about 20–30 seconds and mentally set the intention that it is being cleansed.
This method is especially useful for:
- Bracelets
- Delicate stones
- Crystals you wear daily
3. Cloth Cleansing (quick and safe)

You can also cleanse a crystal by gently wiping it with a clean cloth and holding it in your hands for a moment.
While doing this, simply focus on the intention that the crystal is ready to support you. This is a very easy method if you want something quick and completely safe.
How I Suggest Charging Your Crystals
After cleansing, charging helps refresh the crystal.
1. Sunlight Charging
Placing the crystal in early morning sunlight for about 20–30 minutes is a simple way to recharge it.
I usually advise avoiding strong afternoon sunlight, as some crystals may lose colour with long exposure. Avoide Sunlight Charging for Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Fluorite, Aquamarine, Smoky Quartz.
2. Moonlight Charging
Many people prefer charging crystals under moonlight overnight. This is a gentle method and suitable for almost all stones.
You can place them on a clean cloth near a window or balcony where moonlight reaches.
3. Intention Charging
This is the simplest method and works anywhere.
Hold the crystal in your hand, close your eyes, and think clearly about what you want from it. You may focus on peace, confidence, protection, or clarity.
I often tell people this step is important because it helps you connect personally with your crystal and reminds you why you are using it.
How Often I Suggest Cleansing and Charging
There is no fixed schedule. In general, I recommend:
- Once when you receive the crystal
- Once every 2–4 weeks
- After emotionally heavy situations
If you wear your crystal daily, occasional cleansing helps it feel fresh and meaningful.
Cleansing and charging crystals does not need to be complicated. What matters most is doing it with awareness and a clear intention. Whether you use water, smoke, sunlight, or simple focus, the goal is to feel connected to your crystal and its purpose in your life.
When cared for properly, your crystal becomes more than just a stone. It becomes something you use with clarity, trust, and confidence.
